ABSTRACT
Natural disasters
are painful events that deeply affect societies. Earthquakes, in particular,
can cause great destruction and loss of life in residential areas.
Identification of those who lost their lives in earthquakes and determination
of the causes of death is a process in which both forensic medicine experts and
families are constantly striving.
In the earthquake
that occurred on February 6, 2023, a total of 50,783 people died, 1237 in
Malatya. In our study, the death cases that occurred in Malatya on February 6,
2023 were evaluated by retrospectively examining the data received from the
Malatya Forensic Medicine Group Presidency, based on the approval letter of the
Forensic Medicine Institute dated 20.09.2023 and numbered 2023/893.
In the study, the
age, gender, nationality of the deceased, the day on which he was examined
after the earthquake, whether he came from an urban or rural area, whether his
body integrity was preserved, whether decomposition had started, the trauma
area, the sample taken and whether there was a dead stain were investigated.
Some data could not be accessed because the research was conducted
retrospectively and it was difficult to access all data.
It is known that
some of the people who lost their lives in the earthquake were foreign
nationals. There are some difficulties in the identification process of the
bodies of these people.
