Özet

Abstract This qualitative study examines the multidimensional impact of friendships on first-year undergraduate students’ transition to university life. The study analyzes the function of friendships in students’ academic, social, and personal adjustment processes through a case study design. Data collected from 27 participants selected via purposive sampling were analyzed using thematic analysis. Six main themes were identified: desired qualities in friendship, expectations from university friendships, support in coping with difficulties, impact on academic achievement, the role of friends in social activities, and contributions to personal development. The findings reveal that students’ need to build relationships based on trust, sincerity, and empathy reinforces their sense of psychological safety. Moreover, friendships were found to support academic success through collaboration, motivation, and knowledge sharing, while enhancing social participation and a sense of belonging. Participants emphasized that friendships serve not only an emotional but also an academic and professional investment function. In conclusion, friendships are positioned as a fundamental resource that alleviates transition stress, accelerates identity development, and facilitates long-term social adaptation among first-year students. The study suggests that universities should holistically design peer mentoring, social integration activities, and structured support programs to strengthen the firstyear experience.
