The alumina production from bauxite by the Bayer process has been known for many years and it is successfully applied industrially. Instead, besides the bauxites that are not suitable for the Bayer process, intensive research is being carried out on alumina production from non-bauxites such as kaolinitic clays, nepheline syenite, fly and bottom ashes from coal combustion plants, various feldspars, and pumice which has considerable reserves in Türkiye. The structure of aluminum silicate minerals in these ores is activated by roasting or intensive milling to provide more efficient dissolution under acidic leaching conditions. In this paper, the results obtained from studies on thermal and mechanical activation of ores, acidic leaching and purification conditions of pregnant leach solutions for the alumina extraction from non-bauxite sources are presented.
