Phytochemical, Antibacterial and Antifungal Analysis of Hypericum malatyanum Peşmen Essential Oil Using Experimental and Molecular Docking Approaches

Hypericum malatyanum Peşmen is an endemic species belonging to the Hypericaceae family that has been used as a sedative, antiseptic, and antispasmodic for treatment purposes in conditions such as wounds, burns, ulcers, hemorrhoids, diarrhea, bacterial and viral infections. This study aims to determine the phytochemical composition of the essential oil from the plant's aerial parts and to investigate its antimicrobial activity and in silico activity. As a result of the GC/MS assay, the main components of H. malatyanum's essential oil were β-farnesene (15.52%), α-pinene (11.47%), limonene (6.46%), δ-cadinene (3.52%), germacrene D (3.43%), caryophyllene oxide (3.13%), and γ-muurolene (3.02%). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of H. malatyanum essential oil was 1.562 µL/mL against all tested bacterial species except Staphylococcus aureus (MIC: 0.390 µL/mL). As a result of the antifungal assay, the MIC values of the essential oil against Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, and Candida tropicalis were found to be 0.781, 0.390, 1.562, and 0.781 µL/mL, respectively. This antimicrobial property can be attributed to the terpenes predominantly found in the plant essential oil. This preliminary study showed H. malatyanum's usability as a valuable, effective antimicrobial agent across the medical, pharmaceutical, and food industry sectors.
