This study aims to examine the impact of advancing technology and increasing digitalization on individuals and societies through a descriptive methodology, using the 2017 film The Circle as a central case for analysis. The primary objective of the study is to offer a philosophical analysis of how contemporary technology, which has evolved to enable constant surveillance and control, may give rise to surveillance societies, threaten fundamental values such as individual freedom and privacy, and lead to existential concerns. The first section explores how individuals in today’s success-oriented society have become subjects of performance. The second section investigates why these performance-driven individuals do not perceive the constant monitoring of their lives as problematic, adopting an ideology of transparency, which reflects the theme of the erosion of privacy. The third section discusses the potential risks that surveillance poses to individual freedom and existential integrity, within the framework of the concept of the panopticon. The conclusion presents the central argument of the article, which asserts that, while technology and digitalization offer certain innovations that may be seen as beneficial to human life, we must not remain indifferent to the potential dangers, such as the violation of individual freedom, the erosion of privacy, the totalitarianizing of corporations with access to unlimited data, and their ability to harness economic and political power to manipulate individuals and societies.
