Özet

In the present study, consciousness levels of the people living in Izmir city were determined and their trend depending on education was evaluated. It was aimed to offer cares to be taken to increase consciousness levels. Public opinion about environmental matters was investigated using a standard questionnaire form. The questionnaire was applied to volunteers living in the districts of Balcova, Bornova, Buca, Cigli, Gaziemir, Guzelbahce, Karsiyaka, Konak and Narlidere in Izmir. It was found that environmental problems are not among the most important problems on public agenda in Turkey. However, it was the second most important problem of Izmir. Distorted urbanisation was found to be both Turkey and Izmir's most important environmental problem when considered all education levels. Other important environmental matters were sequenced as air, water, noise and radioactive pollution types. Housing areas were found by all education groups to be responsible for air, water and noise pollution.
