The integration of the increasing number of distributed generation systems into the grid, various electrical loads entering and exiting the system, electrical faults etc. cause power quality problems in transmission and distribution systems. With the development of power electronics and semiconductor technologies, FACTS (Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems) devices have replaced classical switching methods in solving power quality problems. FACTS devices eliminate quality problems and increase the tranferring capacity of the line. Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) is one of the preferred devices among FACTS devices due to its many features such as response time speed, reactive power control without having large elements etc. However, STATCOM is more costly than other equivalent FACTS devices in large power systems. Therefore, the placement of STATCOMs in every required region is not always feasible. The most critical common component of a STATCOM and a PV System is the DC-AC Inverter. With this motivation, a concept called FV-STATCOM has been presented by researchers, which allows a PV system to be operated as a STATCOM. Accordingly, the inverters in the PV system can be operated as STATCOM with additional control methods. In PV systems, the remaining inverter capacity from active power production during the day and the PV system is idle at night, so the entire inverter capacity can be used to solve the power quality problem. In this study, the working principles of classical STATCOM and FV-STATCOM are detailed. Studies conducted in the literature on FV-STATCOM are included. The control methods of FVSTATCOM and the power quality problems it can solve are mentioned. In addition, the advantages of FV-STATCOM, its potential and opportunities for the future are mentioned. This study is expected to contribute to the Turkish literature for researchers currently working on, considering working on, or seeking to gain knowledge in this field.
