In the seventeenth century, Locke developed a theory of “natural rights”, stating that all human beings have certain rights deriving from their nature, not from their state or laws, and that the legitimacy of the state rests on its respect for these rights. The human rights framework that came to prominence in the twentieth century developed out of the social rights tradition shaped by the American and French revolutions. Since the end of the Second World War, a growing body of literature has developed on the subject by legal and political scientists, alongside a number of practical efforts to implement human rights principles. To what extent is the concept of human rights included in social science theories whose main object of study is society and human beings? In this paper, in order to answer this question, classical and contemporary sociological theories will be analyzed and the methodology of the sociology of human rights will be emphasized.
