Abstract:One of the most important scientific and technological developments of the 21st century is biotechnology. The impact of biotechnology on peoples' everyday lives continuously increases. Parallel to the recent developments in biotechnology, our students need to become more knowledgable about the social, ethical, and economic implications that emerge areas such as genetic engineering, cloning, genetically modified foods. Teachers who have the greatest role in the development of the society need to be qualified with subject matter knowledge as well pedagogical knowledge. But, the point of view science teachers biotechnological concepts, processes and issues is not known clearly in Turkey. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to investigate the knowledge of prospective science teachers and primary science teachers about popular biotechnology subject.In this study, for determining the knowledge level of the science teachers' about biotechnology is used biotechnology knowledge test with 35 questions is used by us devoloped.The Biotechnology knowledge test that devoloped by us was administered to 291 prospective science teachers in a Inonu University, Faculty of Education during the 2012-2013 academic years. In addition, the Biotechnology knowledge test was administered to 58 primary science teachers in the center of Malatya.Investigation was made to reveal whether or not the knowledge of prospective science teachers and primary science teachers about biotechnology varies across different variables (such as the gender, the level of education, the year of their study, the type of faculty and department they graduated from). Collected data is analized by using t-test for independent groups, t-test and ANOVA test with SPSS.Results showed that there were significant differences in the Biotechnology knowledge levels of the prospective science teachers with regard to years in school whereas there were no significant differences with regard to their type of high schools they graduated, their gender and educational level of parents. In addition, it was detected that the data of science teachers in biotechnology knowledge level do not differentiate significantly with regard to gender, the level of education, the year of their study, the type of faculty and department they graduated from.
