Abstract:

This study includes comparative morphological analyzes of Cirsium Mill. sect. Cirsium (Asteraceae) species distributed in Turkey. 17 species (22 taxa) were morphologically examined within the scope of the study. Descriptions of the species in relevant literatures were improved. Distinctively important characters have been illustrated. Also, distribution maps of the species were given.Achene characteristics of 16 (21 taxa) species were morphologically and micromorphologically examined. Achene microphotographs in different sizes were obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and investigated for micromorphological studies. The taxa of Cirsium were divided into eight Types according to the achene surface characteristics: scalariform, ribbed, sulcate, scrobiculate-ribbed, scrobiculate, scrobiculate-reticulate, reticulate and bireticulate.A numerical study based on morphological and micromorphological characteristics of cauline leaves and capitula of the specieswere examined and the phenograms showing similarities of species were obtained. A total of 59 characters (26 qualitative and 33 quantitative) have been evaluated for numerical studies. Of these characters 14 were related with about leaves and 45 about capitula. In addition, Cirsium aggregatum Ledeb. (sect. Epitrachys DC.), Picnomon acarna (L.) Cass. and Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn. were examined as the outer group in numerical studies.Following these studies, it was concluded that the macro and micromorphology of achenes are important distinguishing character between the taxa.According to the phenograms, the taxa are generally divided into five groups. C. rhizocephalum s.l., C. echinus, C. simplex subsp. armenum and C. frickii were arranged in apart branchs from the other taxa, the other taxa are adjoined with morphologically similar taxa. Subspecies and varieties are generally arranged in close branches.Morphometric analyzes were performed by UPGMA method. The voucher specimens were deposited in the Herbarium of Balıkesir University and the Herbarium of İnönü University (INU).KEYWORDS: Achene micromorphology, Asteraceae, Cirsium, numerical analyze, sect.Cirsium.
