Prof. Sibel (Şık) KahramanThe removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater is one of important subject in waterpollution control. There is a need to develop innovative and alternative technologies that canremove toxic heavy metal pollutants from environment. In recent years, there has beenconsiderable interest in the use of agricultural by-products as adsorbents for removal of heavymetal.In this study, two agricultural wastes, cotton stalk and apricot seed bark were used asheavy metal adsorbent material to adsorb copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) ions in solutions. Theeffects of various parameters, such as adsorbent mass concentration, adsorbent particle size,initial pH, contact time, agitation speed and initial metal concentration on the biosorption ofCu and Pb ions by two agricultural wastes were determined. Biosorption capacities ofagricultural wastes were significantly affected by solution pH, adsorbent mass concentration,adsorbent particle size and initial metal concentration. The adsorption efficiency of twoagricultural waste was in the order cotton stalk > apricot seed bark and the agricultural wastesadsorbed metal ions in the order of Pb>Cu.In addition, antibacterial effect of the metal containing solution on a soil bacterium, P.aeruginosa, before and after biosorption was determined. Biosorption of these metals withagricultural wastes reduced their toxic effects on P. aeruginosa. This reduction in toxic effectis important both in respect of environmental biotechnology and waste detoxification.This study has indicated that cotton stalk and apricot seed bark could be employed aslow-cost alternatives in wastewater treatment for the removal of heavy metals.KEYWORDS: Agricultural waste, antibacterial effect, biosorption, heavy metal
